Pediatric Dental Fillings

Receiving a dental filling is a way to restore the tooth after a dental cavity or tooth decay. When the bacteria in your child’s mouth combines with sugar from the foods they eat, it creates an acid. This acid begins to eat at your child’s sensitive tooth enamel, causing it to weaken and creating tiny holes in the enamel, known as dental cavities. If caught early, these cavities can be treated with a dental filling. The filling will fill in the decayed portion of the tooth, protecting it and preventing the bacteria from spreading further into the tooth.

Benefits Of Composite Resin Fillings

Fillings are commonly made of either silver amalgam or composite resin material. A few of the benefits of the composite resin fillings include:

  • The ability to match the resin to the color of the tooth, making them less noticeable.
  • Less drilling is required, which is great for kids who are fearful of the drilling noise.
  • Direct bonding to your child’s tooth means increased strength.

Process Of Placing A Dental Filling

There are three simple steps when your child is receiving a dental filling. These steps are:

  1. Making sure the tooth and surrounding tissues are numbed in order to ensure a pain-free dental experience for your child.
  2. Removing the bacteria and decay from the cavity in the affected tooth and thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting the cavity.
  3. Applying the filling material to the sterile dental cavity, and allowing it to harden.

Dental fillings are one of the simplest dental procedures and we want you to rest assured that your child is in gentle and knowledgeable hands. If you help your child to properly care for his or her dental fillings properly (brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and visiting our office every 6 months for a checkup), it’s possible for your child’s filling to last for years.
