Holistic dentistry is a method that considers dental health in the context of a patient’s mind, body, spirit and emotions. While holistic dentistry is quite varied in its practices and methods, at Camp Little Tooth® our goal is to focus on the areas of dental disease that may have a negative impact on the patient’s overall health and wellbeing. Once we’ve identified a problem, it is then our goal to find the least traumatic and invasive approach to healing while utilizing the latest technology.
Here at Camp Little Tooth®, we focus on prevention and early intervention for your children’s teeth. It’s important to us that the entire child is healthy and happy, not just his or her oral health. We believe in the use of essential oils and aromatherapy to heal and renew and proudly use blends created by Lafayette’s Little Herbal Apothecary. We aim to create a warm and inviting atmosphere to make you and your child feel at ease in the dental environment.
One of the goals of holistic dentistry is to avoid introducing toxic substances into the body. Traditional amalgam fillings contain mercury. These types of fillings are often quite cost-effective and the FDA has shown that the mercury in these fillings is safe. We here at Camp Little Tooth® are concerned about the well being of your child and prefer to use composite resin fillings, which are mercury-free and more natural looking.
We are respectful of our camp families decision not to incorporate fluoride into their campers dental care. We offer a variety of delicious fluoride free options for their dental cleaning including marshmallow, chocolate and strawberry. We also have fluoride free toothpaste for your child to take home after their dental visit in their oral hygiene care kit.
Nutrition plays an enormous role in the health of our teeth and mouths. In fact, a good diet can help prevent tooth decay and even reverse the effects of decay once it’s begun. It’s important to remember that your teeth are living organs, filled with cellular structures, connective tissues, and nerves. In order to protect these delicate structures from damage and decay, we need to be aware of what we’re feeding them. The famous dental researcher, Dr. Weston Price spent the early 20th century studying the effects of diet on dental health. He found that diets rich in sugar and flour increased dental cavities and even led to the crowding of the teeth. However, diets rich in minerals and vitamins promoted the strengthening of the dentin and the tooth enamel, which could reverse the course of decay in the teeth. We are thrilled to partner with Dr. Sasha Houseman of Flatirons Integrative Health, right here in Boulder, to offer our campers information and treatments to improve overall wellness including oral health.
