Camp Little Tooth’s Reasons for a Tooth Extraction.

At Camp Little Tooth, Dr. Raelene Fulford and the rest of the staff here prioritize the preservation of your child’s natural teeth. We will do all we can to help your child retain his or her teeth. However, there are certain reasons why it may become necessary to extract your child’s tooth.

Reasons for a Tooth Extraction

When nothing else can be done to save a tooth, it may need to be removed. A few reasons for tooth extractions may include:

  • Baby teeth that have been impacted or won’t erupt
  • Impacted wisdom teeth
  • Crowding of baby teeth, which means not having enough space for the adult teeth to grow into the mouth
  • A tooth damaged too severely by decay, trauma, or infection
  • Preparation before receiving braces or other orthodontic treatment

After Your Child’s Tooth Extraction

After your child’s tooth has been extracted, we will use sterile gauze to control any bleeding. Depending on the type of extraction and the roots of the tooth removed, we may also need to use sutures to close the wound. It’s normal for your child to experience swelling or discomfort in the hours after the extraction. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain medication can be used to control this discomfort and swelling, such as Ibuprofen or Tylenol. Use ice packs to control any swelling.

Additionally, make sure your child eats soft food in the days after his or her tooth has been extracted. Avoid spicy foods or anything that is sticky, chewy, or crunchy.
