Easing Your Child’s Teething Pain

Main Content

Babies faceTeething is a difficult part of life, for both babies and their parents. Some children are great at teething, showing almost no symptoms or discomfort. Other babies (and their moms and dads!) are in for a long and painful teething process. We know how difficult it can be for caregivers to see their children in pain, so we’ve put together a list of a few things you can do to help relieve your baby’s discomfort.

Symptoms of Teething

Below are a few signs that your baby may be teething:

  • Red or swollen gum tissue
  • Flushed, red cheeks
  • Sudden difficulty sleeping
  • Excessive drooling
  • Fussy and irritable

Relieving Teething Pain

Now that you know the signs of teething, below are a few ways to help relieve your child’s pain:

  • Chill your child’s favorite teething toy in the freezer for 15 minutes. The cold temperature will relieve the swelling and the pain.
  • Apply counter pressure to your child’s gums with a clean finger or massage the area with a clean washcloth.
  • Chill your baby’s pacifier in the freezer. Chewing on a pacifier can offer the same relief as a teething toy.
  • Talk to your baby’s pediatrician about the possibility of offering your child some over-the-counter infant pain relief medication. Make sure to talk about it with your baby’s doctor as well as with the pharmacist for dosage information.
  • Lastly, your baby may simply want to spend some time cuddling on the sofa for a little while. This can be therapeutic for parent and child!

If you have questions or concerns about your teething child, please feel free to give us a call. Camp Little Tooth is located here in Lafayette, Colorado.
