Dental Health Problems During Pregnancy

Main Content

Pregnant womanWe know that pregnancy means countless doctor’s appointments and to-do lists, but it’s also important to visit the dentist during your pregnancy. There are a few dental diseases that are more likely to develop because of the hormone changes (increases in estrogen and progesterone especially) that occur when you’re pregnant.

Dental Diseases Caused by Pregnancy

Below are a few problems that can be created or made worse by pregnancy:

  • Tooth Decay and Cavities – Things like morning sickness, an enhanced gag reflex, and fatigue can make it much more difficult to stay on top of your oral hygiene habits. However, it’s important to do your best to care for your teeth or you’ll become more susceptible to dental cavities and tooth decay.
  • Pregnancy Gingivitis – Gingivitis during pregnancy is so common that it has its own name! This is because gum tissue is especially vulnerable to the hormone changes that take place during pregnancy. If you’re experiencing bleeding gums, or pain and swelling in the gum tissue, please contact your dentist immediately.
  • Gum Tumors – Lastly, some women experience tumors on their gum tissue during pregnancy. These are usually just harmless overgrowths of tissue that appear on the gums, and will usually disappear after you give birth. However, if they’re bothering you or becoming painful, please let your dentist know.

The best way to keep your teeth healthy during your pregnancy is to practice good at-home dental hygiene. In fact, pregnancy makes it even more important to stay on top of your dental care. Make sure you’re brushing at least twice a day for two minutes, flossing every day, and that you visit your dentist for a cleaning and a checkup at least once during your pregnancy.
