Common Reasons for Your Child’s Tooth Pain

Main Content

Young boy with tooth painOne of the most common complaints we hear in our office is related to a child complaining of tooth pain. Most parents immediately assume that a toothache equals tooth decay or a dental cavity. While these are common reasons, there are also many others, most of which are completely avoidable by taking the proper steps.

Common Reasons for a Child’s Toothache

Here at Camp Little Tooth, we want the parents of our patients to be aware of common dental problems and how they can be avoided. Below are a few of the most common reasons for a child’s toothache:

  • Dental Cavity/Tooth Decay – Tooth decay and dental cavities are the most common source of tooth pain for kids. Whether it’s a small dental cavity or a larger portion of decay, once the enamel has been penetrated, pain will result.
  • Tooth Infection – If tooth decay or a dental cavity go untreated, the decay will eventually reach the center of the tooth, also known as the pulp. This will result in a very painful infection and may require root canal therapy or even the removal of the tooth to treat.
  • Gum Disease – While most people would associate gum disease with pain in the gum tissue, it can also cause pain in an otherwise healthy tooth. This is known as referred pain and is caused by the swelling of the gum tissue.
  • Bruxism – Lastly, if your child is grinding or clenching his or her teeth during the night, he or she may experience pain. This disorder is known as bruxism and is most commonly caused by stress or certain sleep problems. While bruxism cannot be cured, the symptoms can be treated by wearing a night guard to bed to protect the teeth.

If your child is experiencing tooth pain, it’s always a good idea to bring them to our office sooner rather than later. The more quickly we can treat the problem, the less pain your child will have to endure in the meantime.
